Meditation:
it is not what you think!
Are you tired of hearing you need
to relax but nobody telling you how?
We take our Sarvanga
approach to health. To be healthy we must be able to have a
healthy state of awareness, which involves the ability to focus
and maintain attention on the present moment. In other words if
your mind is playing a non- stop recording of a worry that you
may have, it cannot give full attention to a task at hand.
Meditation is a tool to help you achieve that focus.
We develop habits in all aspects
of our lives. Many of us develop the habit of negative thinking.
We do this out of repetition, and because of life experiences
that we have had, or messages that we were given. We set up
negative “self-talk”. We are often not even conscious that we do
this. Meditation brings a keen awareness to our “self talk”. It
is empowering to know that you can change that chatter in your
mind, and when you do amazing things happen! Your self esteem is
raised and you start believing you can achieve great
things….because you can!
There are many meditation
techniques. We help you find techniques that work for you.
The benefits of meditation are
endless. The obvious is that it helps to develop a sense of
contentment and serenity. Through meditation we can alter
brainwaves. We learn to activate the parasympathetic nervous
system. It is in this state that we release “feel good”
chemicals in the body. We can regulate blood pressure, heart
rate, and teach the muscles of the body to release tension. Ahh
doesn’t that sound wonderful? No more tension headaches. No more
sleepless, restless nights!
We spend most of our day in our
sympathetic nervous system; we enter our “flight or fright
mode”. This system serves a great purpose if we need to protect
ourselves. We are not programmed to spend all day in this state
however, many of us do. The body releases stress hormones when
we are in this state. Our sympathetic nervous system is in
overdrive and our bodies and mental states are paying the price.
It is very empowering to know
that you can have tools to invoke a mental balance!
On a spiritual level (whatever
your faith tradition) meditation brings that deep sense of calm
to connect with spirit.
Meditation is exercise for the
nervous system. What kind of shape is yours in?
